HOKA Kaha 3 GTX Review featured image

Breaking in new boots before a big trip is non‑negotiable—but truly testing them only happens when conditions turn cold, wet, steep, and relentless. We put plenty of miles i for this HOKA Kaha 3 GTX review before our trip, but our 7-day Kilimanjaro trek was the real proving ground for these HOKA hiking boots.

Between muddy trails, wet mornings, cold summit conditions, and long days under load, both the men’s and women’s versions of the Kaha 3 GTX had every opportunity to show their strengths—and any weaknesses. Spoiler alert: they came away with our full confidence.

Key Takeaways

“Out-of-the-Box” Comfort: Both the men’s and women’s versions delivered a superbly comfortable experience over seven grueling days. The combination of HOKA’s signature cushioned EVA midsole and a secure fit makes these boots trail-ready from day one.

Rugged Stability Without the Weight: Despite the high-ankle support and stability necessary for steep, rocky descents, the Kaha 3 GTX remains surprisingly lightweight. It offers the protection of a heavy-duty trekking boot without the usual leg fatigue.

Impenetrable Weatherproofing: From muddy rainforest trails to snowy summit conditions, the GORE-TEX membrane and Nubuck leather remained completely waterproof. They are ideal for hikers prioritizing warmth and dryness in cold, wet environments.

To keep it simple, here are our pros and cons of the men’s and women’s HOKA Kaha 3 GTX hiking shoes:

ProsCons
Incredible out-of-the-box comfortHigher price point
Elite waterproofing (GORE-TEX)Can feel “too warm” in mild weather
Rocker geometry reduces foot fatigueSlightly heavier than trail runners
Massive Vibram MegaGrip TractionBulkier footprint than “fast and light” boots

But let’s dive into how they performed “in the wild.”

Testing the HOKA Kaha 3 GTX on Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro threw a bit of everything at our feet—starting with moisture. The first few days were wet. And we dealt with mud, rock, cold mornings, steep ascents, long descents, and even a stretch of snow near the summit. They were conditions that would’ve punished a substandard footwear choice. Both pairs of Kaha 3 GTX boots handled the full spectrum with confidence.

But since I wore mine and she wore hers, it’s tough to lump our summaries together. So we broke them down individually.

Men’s HOKA Kaha 3 GTX Review Takeaways

From day one, the men’s Kaha 3 GTX kept my feet warm and completely dry. Even during wet stretches and early-morning starts, moisture never made it inside the boot.

As a self-proclaimed member of the Sweaty Soles Club—yes, my feet sweat a lot—I’ll be honest: they were almost too warm at times—but for the average hiker, especially in colder or wetter conditions, that’s a huge plus. The Nubuck Leather GORE‑TEX membrane and GORE-TEX upper clearly prioritize protection.

One feature I’m always critical of is ankle support. I have a long history of rolling ankles more often than I’d like, and the high‑ankle design gave me the stability and confidence I look for on uneven terrain. It also provided extra reassurance on the LONG descent from the summit—I wasn’t overtaxing my muscles worrying about making every step perfect.

I was also able to lace them looser than normal—something I rarely do—without experiencing any slippage, hot spots, or blisters. That combination of lockdown and comfort is hard to get right, but HOKA nailed it.

This is also my second pair of HOKA hiking boots—I reviewed the Stinson Mid GTX hiking shoes for The Trek a few years back. So, at this point, I’m starting to think I may be a HOKA advocate through and through.

Women’s HOKA Kaha 3 GTX Review Takeaways

My partner’s women’s Kaha 3 GTX review was equally positive—and in some areas, even more impressive.

Her biggest takeaways:

Excellent grip, especially on wet and uneven terrain

Noticeably lighter feel compared to previous hiking boots she’s worn

Zero blisters or hot spots throughout the entire trek

A standout colorway that made her boots easy to spot in our group

Comfort is often the deciding factor on long hikes, and not dealing with foot issues over seven demanding days is about as strong an endorsement as it gets.

HOKA Kaha 3 Comfort and Support

Both versions of the Kaha 3 GTX excelled at what HOKA does best: comfort over distance.

The cushioned EVA midsole reduced foot fatigue on long days, while the structured upper provided stability without feeling stiff or restrictive. Despite their supportive build, neither pair felt overly heavy, which is especially impressive given their waterproof construction and ankle height.

Sizing & Fit

One of the most common questions for HOKA buyers is: “Should I size up?”

In our HOKA Kaha 3 GTX review, both the men’s and women’s boots ran true to size in terms of width and arch support. However, high-altitude trekking introduces two variables: foot swelling and steep descents.

While I had zero issues with my pair, my partner experienced some “toe bang” during the 4,000-foot descent from the Kilimanjaro summit. This happens when your toes slide forward and hit the front of the toe box.

Our Sizing Recommendations:

For Day Hikers: Stick to your standard size. The Kaha 3 has a generous toe box that accommodates natural foot splay.

For Backpackers/Trekkers: If you plan on doing long, steep descents with a heavy pack, consider sizing up a half size if you don’t have a great lacing technique for avoiding “toe bang.” This gives your feet room to swell and ensures your toes won’t jam against the front of the boot on the way down.

Lacing Hack: Use the “Heel Lock” (the extra top eyelet) to keep your foot anchored in the heel cup. This is what allowed me to run my laces looser without losing stability.

HOKA Kaha 3 Durability and Weather Protection

Between rain, mud, and constant wear, the Kaha 3 GTX boots showed no signs of breakdown. Seams held, the waterproofing remained intact, and that amazing Vibram MegaGrip traction stayed reliable throughout the trip.

The high‑ankle design also added a layer of weather protection that low‑cut boots simply can’t match—especially when conditions are sloppy. One thing I’ve loved about these HOKA hiking boots is the peace of mind on wet trails. Unless you hit a deep puddle, your feet are pretty much guaranteed to stay dry.

HOKA Kaha 3 vs. Kaha 2: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

If you’re currently rocking the Kaha 2, you’re likely wondering if the Kaha 3 is a revolutionary jump or a subtle refinement. While the iconic “HOKA silhouette” remains, the 3 introduces three key technical upgrades that we felt during the Kilimanjaro trek:

FeatureKaha 2 GTXKaha 3 GTX (The Upgrade)
GORE-TEX TechStandard GORE-TEX BootieGORE-TEX Invisible Fit (Bonded directly to the upper)
Midsole MaterialStandard EVA30% Sugarcane EVA (More responsive & sustainable)
Upper ConstructionMulti-layer NubuckStreamlined Nubuck with Recycled Polyester Mesh
Feel on TrailSturdy but slightly stifferMore flexible and breathable

The biggest “under the hood” change is the GORE-TEX Invisible Fit. By bonding the waterproof membrane directly to the outer material, HOKA eliminated that “crunchy” bootie feel. It makes the boot feel less like a heavy cast and more like a reinforced version of your favorite sneaker.

Do I Recommend the HOKA Kaha 3 GTX Hiking Boots?

After conducting our HOKA Kaha 3 GTX review at home and on one of the world’s most iconic trekking routes, the HOKA Kaha 3 GTX hiking boots have definitely been worth the investment. Sure, they aren’t the most affordable hiking shoes out there, but when it comes to comfort and protection on long trips, investing in footwear is non-negotiable in my book.

Here are our favorite features:

Reliable waterproof protection

Excellent comfort over long distances

Strong ankle support and stability

Zero blister performance for both men’s and women’s versions

If you’re looking for a trekking boot that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing confidence on rugged terrain—especially for cold, wet, or multi‑day backpacking trips—the Kaha 3 GTX is an easy recommendation.

They earned their place on Kilimanjaro, and they’ve earned a permanent spot in our gear lineup.
